Charles Clarence Wayland was a graduate of the Eckels School of Embalming in Philadelphia, as mentioned in his obituary in the New Journal and Guide, above. When he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, he was employed by J. H. Hill in Charlottesville as an undertaker and embalmer, and as the Daily Progress article below shows, he was still employed by J. H. Hill at Irving-Way-Hill when he received his Virginia license in November 1917. J. H. Hill was one of the founders of Irving, Way, Hill Company which became Hill and Wood Funeral Service, now located downtown at North First and Market Street.

By 1920 Charles Wayland had his own undertaking establishment in Bedford, Virginia. Twenty years later, his WWII draft card shows that he was working at the University of Virginia Hospital. His death certificate shows that he was still working as an embalmer for the University of Virginia Hospital at the end of his life.

Charles and Amelia Wayland must have moved into this house at the corner of 5th Street SW and Dice shortly after it was built (ca. 1925), possibly by his mother’s brothers, the Goodloes, who were carpenters and builders. They lived in this beautiful house until Charles’ death in 1946 and Amelia’s in 1975. In 1939 the Wayland house was featured in New Journal and Guide.
