Ella Hughes Kennie and Eliza Jefferson Kennedy, the wife of Rev. I. A. J. Kennedy, were first cousins. Ella’s mother, Mary Jefferson Hughes, was the sister of Eliza’s father, Walker Jefferson. Mary and Walker Jefferson were the children of Arthur Jefferson.

On December 2, 1895 the Daily Progress reported in a page one article entitled “Visit of a Centenarian” that Arthur Jefferson, who “was in town today, looking “spry as a cricket” claimed to be 111 years old. “He claims to have seen Jefferson, for whom he was named, and many other statesmen. He belonged to Major Wood, the grandfather of Warner Wood, Esq.”

When Arthur Jefferson died three years later, the paper reported that “The old gentleman claimed to be one hundred and fifteen years old. There is no question that he was 100 or more.”
