According to an article in the University of Virginia’s Alumni News (Vol. L, No. 10, December – January 1963), Mr. George E. “Buck” Coles, then a custodian for the East Lawn student rooms, stated that his Mother, Mrs. Addie Golden Coles (1869 –1944), was born at “The Crackerbox”, a two-story outbuilding behind Pavilion X and adjacent to Levering Hall (Hotel F). Mrs. Coles’ Mother, Mrs. Jennetta Dabney (1829-1891), may have been a servant of UVa Professor of Modern Languages Maximilian Schele de Vere. Mrs. Coles, Mrs. Dabney and several other Coles family members are buried at the Daughters of Zion Cemetery.
